VANESSA WILSON
With a career in legal services spanning nearly two decades, beginning in 2006 as a full-time temp I have cultivated a diverse and adaptable skillset and legal specializations. This diverse experience shaped my understanding of client needs and ultimately inspired me to further my education. After my time at SAIT in 2009 to 2012, I focused primarily on the complexities of family law and child welfare law. Following a brief detour into the world of floor sales, I returned to my passion for legal services in 2016. Another stint as a full-time temp broadened my horizons to include corporate securities and pension law. This comprehensive background allows me to bring a uniquely client-focused and customer-first approach at HD Law Group.
Since joining Jason Demers in April 2017, I have been instrumental in the growth of his criminal defense, civil litigation, family, personal injury, and adult surrogate practices. My dedication to providing exceptional client service is paramount. My ongoing pursuit of a Bachelor of Professional Arts with a focus in Criminal Justice and Legal Studies at Athabasca University has grown my ability to contribute innovative and to bring effective strategies to my paralegal duties at HD Law.
Outside of the office, my youngest son's air cadet program has been a significant part of my life for the past nine years. I've proudly volunteered on the Parents Sponsoring Committee, serving as Secretary for two terms, and later as a Civilian Volunteer, holding positions like Supply Officer and Training Officer. More recently, I served as Chair of the Executive Committee and with the Air Cadets League of Canada – Alberta as the Communication and Marketing Director. Currently I continue to volunteer as an Assistant Wing Director – Southern Region with their HART subcommittee, dedicated to our annual International Remembrance Day Ceremony.
My commitment to the paralegal profession shines through my involvement with the Alberta Association of Professional Paralegals (AAPP) since 2021. As a Board member, first as VP Membership and now as Vice President, I'm a strong advocate for the regulation of paralegals in Alberta and increased access to justice. I also enjoy giving back as a paralegal mentor through the AAPP and SAIT's mentorship programs.
When I'm not immersed in the legal world or volunteering, I enjoy the creativity and community of the Calgary’s burlesque scene, spending quality time with my husband and cats, and indulging in my hobbies as a video game enthusiast and chicken wing aficionado.
